About Us

OUR PARISH

Cubbington is a vibrant community, where non-church people look on the Vicar as their spiritual leader.

Geography

Cubbington is a large village situated close to the town of Royal Leamington Spa and has a population of 40411 according to the 2001 census.

The Parish is mainly residential surrounded by green belt and farm land. The village itself has been mentioned in the Doomsday book and was developed in the late 1960/70's. It has a mixture of three and four bedroomed semi and detached houses, bungalows, a few flats and a small council estate and is sought after by people wanting to live in a village atmosphere but with the amenities of a town nearby.

Local Facilities

We are well served by three small shopping areas; these include a Post Office, newsagents, general stores, hairdressers, take-aways, and DIY plus a range of other specialist shops. We have three Public Houses, a Sports and Social Club, a sales and repair garage, a filling station and allotments. The largest employer within the Parish is Thwaites, who make dumper trucks, mainly for the overseas market. In addition, there are a number of other small businesses, including a software company, Mayfair Security and Freight Transport Headquarters.

We also have a care home near to the church housing approximately 80 residents.

We have a very active OAP Association, numbering approx. 800 members, drawn from the village and surrounding area. We have a resoundingly successful Silver Band, who play at many local events.

There is a bus service from the village to Leamington Spa town centre and outlying areas.

A GP surgery and dental practice are located less than a mile away in the neighbouring parish of Lillington and there is an NHS hospital with A&E facilities about 5 miles away in Warwick. There is also a private hospital close to the parish.

There are two infant/junior schools within the parish, Cubbington C of E Combined School (roll 202) and St Teresa's Catholic School (roll 150). In addition there are two pre-school nurseries. The catchment area of a third junior school which is situated just outside the Parish boundary includes some of the dwellings within the Parish.

The nearest main secondary school, North Leamington, is outside the parish. The village has its own village hall with playing fields and football pitches. There is a small children's playground near to the church. Within the Parish is also a Methodist church (with hall) and a Plymouth Brethren Meeting Room.

Ethnicity, Age and social mix

The dominant ethnic group is White, with 2.4% of the population being Asian, and less than 1% made up of mixed or other ethnic groups. The social mix is moderately varied. Many of those who moved in as young families in the late 60 and early 70s still live in their houses but the last five years have seen more new people arrive, as the original residents have died or people have moved away. Houses within the parish sell for £200,000 to £500,000 and attract young families moving up from starter homes

The church plant comprises the church and a vicarage.

We also have planning permission to build a Church Centre on glebe land and have raised about half the necessary funds. However there is concern among some members of the congregation that the current proposals may not be the most appropriate for a variety of reasons, and this is a debate which will need re-visiting.

The church Electoral Roll presently stands at 205, 87 of whom live outside the parish and an average of 130 attend Sunday services.

The approximate social mix and ages of the regular members of the congregation is 70% retired and 30% working in mainly professional jobs.

Ministry

We have a Reader, Jo and a Reader in training, Richard S.

We have a Reader Emeritus, John Dean

We have had a part time Parish Administrator and it is our intention to continue this level of administrative support for the Church.

Under the guidance of our previous incumbent, lay ministry has developed into the following teams:

      ·         Sunday School
·
         Four Home Group Leaders
·
         Children's Service Team
·
Leaders of Edward Bear and Tuesday Bears
·
         Leaders of Rainbow Time
·
         Ladies Fellowship Leader
·
         Mother's Union Leader

Communications

St Marys provides a community news sheet called 'Contact'. This is delivered free to 1,800 homes on a regular basis and reminds people of forthcoming special events, church services as well as other parish news.

There is a weekly pew leaflet, covering services and events for the coming week. A church web-site is in the process of being set up.

Administration

The PCC meets regularly during the year.

Property

The church is a Grade II listed Norman building constructed from sandstone and dates from the early 12th century. The church building seats 200/230 people on mainly fixed wooden pews.

In 1980 major restoration work was carried out costing over £250,000. This was paid for by significant additional giving from the congregation, as well as grants from English Heritage and local charities.

There are no toilet or kitchen facilities on the premises, however we have an arrangement with the landlord of The King's Head, situated opposite the church. There is a small sink in the vicar's vestry.

There is a plot of land reserved adjacent to the churchyard for the future building of a Church Centre and an extension to the churchyard.

There is a voice amplification system installed in the church, including a loop system.

In 1980 a modern vicarage was built on Glebe land. The vicarage overlooks open countryside and Cubbington woods. It is a detached residence comprising four bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen, dining room, study and single garage. The house and garden have been maintained to a high standard.

The churchyard is very well maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers and has won the "Best Kept Churchyard" competition in the Warwick area and also in the Coventry diocese in 2009.

Ecumenical Activity

We have joined with the Methodist church in their annual covenant service, harvest worship and Passover meal, but due to long term illness of both vicar and minister we have been unable to work together as often as we would have liked.

Deanery and Diocese

St Mary's is a member of Warwick and Leamington Deanery within the Diocese of Coventry. We have representatives who play their part in Deanery Synod.

Churches in the Warwick and Leamington Deanery are working together in an exciting partnership and strategy for mission and growth, while retaining their individual identities. St Mary's Cubbington is looking forward to being an active part of this partnership.

Any questions about the Deanery or the strategy can be addressed to the Rural Dean, Rev. Morris Rodham, 01926 778505 (morris@stmarysleamington.com).
